Mohd Irfan

Scores of families of hilly village Bassan of Reasi district who earned their livelihood by cattle rearing and grazing but now since few weeks back incessant rains wreaked havoc in this village as their homes washed away and whatever cattle they were having they too washed way in these natural calamities.

A collapsed house in Bassan village of Reasi, district of J&K, during heavy rain

Aftermath of this natural disaster district administration Reasi rushed to the village and provided some sort of assistance to them so that the losses and the roof which has been damaged due to the rains they be get relieve of the agonies which they are encountering be minimized. After all it’s the duty cast upon the district administration to assess the compensation and losses suffered by the villagers so that compensation be provided to them so that they would not face hardships as which they are undergoing.

Villagers with relief material being provided by the Administration and NGOs

It has been learnt that so much is the devastation in the village that even the road leading to the village Bassan washed away and those organisations, social activists they narrated the nightmarish experience they encountered while trek upon this route to inquire about the well-being of the villagers. Those ones who visited the village they expressed that the villagers are in total despair and mental trauma adding, they wept bitterly that how would they built their houses given the Sky rocketing prices of the essential commodities as already after hard earned money we spent and it takes several years for us to build the houses, a social activist quoting the aggrieved villagers said.

Another collapsed house in the village

“Compensation provided by the district administration is not enough as such we demand adequate compensation from them. Even several organizations that of Global Peace Organization (GPO) also came forward for our rescue and they provided us much needed succour to us which we require the most. We are thankful to administration as well to all those who came to our rescue in our testing times. In this piquant and precarious situation, we urged the public that kindly provide aid to us when we are suffering insurmountable hardships in the backdrop of these intermittent rains”, said the villagers, victim of natural calamity. They said that they have been caught in a devil and deep sea as what to do at this crucial Juncture when they are rendered homeless and they said when they recalled the horrible nights, they shiver downs one’s spine. “As our only source of livelihood is cattle rearing and grazing and when incessant rains came and we apprehended that house may washed away. We ran out for safety but left with no other option then to keep the cattle in open resultant all the cattle washed away in the flood. Imagine what would happen if your only bread earner got left for heavenly abode or killed. As we feed our families by cattle grazing so when it washed away so where shall we go and from where would fill our stomach”, the villagers curse their luck that they suffered immensely. They demand that the Lt. Guv. should do the needful at the earliest before it’s too late. Sooner the administration provided the adequate compensation better it would be as now we are on crutches and waiting anxiously of compensation because still rains would come so where we would take shelter, they asked in choked voice?

The GPO, Chairperson, Advocate Shiekh Altaf Hussain whose organization always remained at the forefront in providing timely compensation to the poor and needy ones wherever any need of the same, says, “Got struck when I visited the village with my team. It was really arduous task to visit that area. I couldn’t able to sit quiet and see the devastation which occurred to these villagers so I decided to carry on the motto of our GPO to help these villagers in these trying times who are waiting anxiously for the aid from the administration. “As already government have with them consolidated funds which they require to make use of it during the unforeseen events which we called Earth quakes, cyclones, rains devastation etc and now the case in hand or the instant case Government should disburse the consolidated funds to the Bassan villagers after assessing the losses”, said a government official not to be named.
