In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially distanced itself from controversial statements made by its Member of Parliament, Kangana Ranaut, regarding the farmers’ protests that rocked India in recent years.
Ranaut, who represents the Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh, sparked outrage with her recent comments on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The actress-turned-politician alleged that during the farmers’ protests against the now-repealed agricultural laws, “bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place.” She further claimed that the protests were part of a larger conspiracy involving foreign powers such as China and the United States.
In response to the growing controversy, the BJP’s Central Media Department issued a press release today, stating unequivocally that Ranaut’s views do not reflect the party’s official stance. The statement emphasized that the BJP neither endorses nor approves of Ranaut’s remarks, considering them her personal opinions.
The press release further reiterated the party’s commitment to its core values: “The BJP remains committed to its core values of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas,’ and any comments that deviate from these principles are not supported by the party. The BJP’s leadership has always stood by the welfare of every section of society, and any remarks that may undermine this commitment are deemed unacceptable.”
This move by the BJP comes at a crucial time when the party is actively seeking to strengthen its ties with the farming community. Political analysts suggest that the party’s swift action in distancing itself from Ranaut’s comments is an attempt to mitigate potential damage to its image and maintain its outreach efforts to farmers.
Ranaut’s controversial statements have not only drawn criticism from opposition parties but have also led to personal repercussions. In a separate incident, a CISF lady constable from Punjab, stationed at Chandigarh airport, had slapped the MP in month of June, allegedly in response to her comments about the farmers’ agitation.
The BJP has reaffirmed its dedication to addressing farmers’ issues through constructive dialogue and policy measures. However, it remains to be seen how this incident will affect the party’s relationship with both its vocal MP and the broader agricultural community in the long term.
