A Sub-Inspector (SI) posted in the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, has been suspended after a woman alleged that he sought sexual favours in exchange for facilitating the transfer of a police official. The accused, Sub-Inspector Chaman Lal, is reported to be due to retire from service next year.
According to the complaint submitted to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu, Tejinder Singh, the woman had approached the officer regarding the transfer of a police official on humanitarian grounds, as the official’s father was bed-ridden. She alleged that the SI later sent inappropriate WhatsApp messages, asked her to meet him and stay at a hotel, and continued messaging her while misusing his official position.
Acting swiftly on the written complaint, IGP Jammu Tejinder Singh ordered the suspension of the officer pending a departmental inquiry. The complainant also submitted screenshots of alleged WhatsApp messages and claimed that the officer had contacted other women in connection with the recruitment of Special Police Officers (SPOs). An inquiry panel has been constituted to examine the allegations and is expected to submit its findings within a month, after which further departmental or legal action will be decided. The allegations remain subject to inquiry, and no final finding of guilt has been established.
