In a swift response to a fraudulent impersonation case, the Jammu Police have registered an FIR at the Cyber Police Station against an individual who has been fraudulently using the name of the Director General of Police (DGP) to extort money from police officers and others.
According to a police spokesperson, FIR No. 8/2024 has been registered under Sections 66C, 66D read with Sections 384, 419, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Cyber Police Station in Jammu. The investigation is being supervised by the Superintendent of Police (SP), Cyber Police, Jammu Zone.
Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) took to their official X (formerly Twitter) handle to caution fellow police officers, colleagues from other government services, departments, and members of the general public about the ongoing fraud.
“This is to convey to fellow police officers, colleagues from other government services, departments, and members of the general public that a fraudster (who is being identified) is using a mobile phone number 8891979985 and is falsely posing as Sh R R Swain, DGP J&K,” the JKP statement read. The fraudster has been contacting various individuals, including police officers, under the guise of the DGP, and seeking money from those they believe could fall victim to their trap.
“While legal action under law is underway, friends, colleagues, and even relatives are requested to be vigilant about this person as well as such persons in future,” the JKP warned. The Jammu Police have taken swift action to address this case of impersonation and financial fraud, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting the public from such nefarious activities.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and report any suspicious communication or requests for money, especially those claiming to be from high-ranking officials. The Cyber Police Station’s involvement in this case underscores the growing need to combat cyber crimes and online frauds, which have become increasingly prevalent in the digital age. By taking decisive action and raising awareness, the Jammu Police aim to send a strong message that impersonation and fraudulent activities will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full force of the law.
It is noteworthy to recall that on January 26, 2024, the Jammu Police initiated legal proceedings against an impersonator who was posing as ADGP Jammu. The Zonal Police Media Centre Jammu posted on the micro-blogging site X (formerly Twitter) stating that “A fraudster has managed to impersonate ADGP Jammu zone, Shri Anand Jain, IPS on various social media platforms using his image including other credentials and is extorting money from people,” and added, “The offender has created the profiles with malicious intent.” This incident underscores the risks associated with online impersonation and highlights the importance of vigilance in identifying and addressing such fraudulent activities to protect individuals and maintain trust in online platforms.
