The bribe was reportedly solicited from a complainant in exchange for performing geo-tagging required for availing benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) scheme.
According to a spokesperson from the ACB, the bureau received a complaint from a resident of Block Arin, District Bandipora, accusing Abdul Rashid Khan of demanding a bribe of ₹6000 for geo-tagging the plinth area of an under-construction house, which was being constructed under the PMAY-G scheme. The complainant alleged that Khan visited the construction site on April 21, 2024, and initially demanded ₹10,000 as a bribe, which was later negotiated down to ₹6000. The complainant was instructed to pay ₹2500 on April 22, with the remainder to be paid after receiving the second installment.
Subsequently, the complainant approached the ACB seeking legal action against Khan for his alleged bribery demands. After preliminary investigation, a case was registered under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, at the Police Station, Anti-Corruption Bureau, Baramulla. A trap team was formed as part of the investigation, which successfully caught Abdul Rashid Khan red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the bribe of ₹2500 from the complainant. Khan was promptly taken into custody after completing all necessary legal procedures, and the bribe money was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses.
The spokesperson further stated that the investigation into the case is ongoing, and additional inquiries will be conducted to uncover any further evidence or accomplices involved in the alleged bribery scheme.
