In a significant step towards fortifying the existing defense relations between India and Oman in the maritime domain, the 6th edition of Staff Talks between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) was conducted on 4th and 5th June 2024 in New Delhi.

The delegation from the RNO was led by Commodore Jasim Mohammed Ali Al Balushi, Director General of Operations and Plans, while the Indian Navy contingent was headed by Commodore Manmeet Singh Khurana, Commodore (FC). This series of Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks serves as a testament to the robust bilateral relations between the two historical maritime neighbors.

During the Staff Talks, both sides engaged in comprehensive deliberations on common maritime security challenges that necessitate enhanced interoperability at sea. Discussions encompassed issues pertaining to operational collaboration, information sharing, Maritime Domain Awareness, training, meteorology, hydrography, and technical assistance.

The delegation from Oman also visited the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram and called on Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, further strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations. Oman holds the distinction of being one of India’s closest partners in the Gulf region, and the regular conduct of Staff Talks plays a pivotal role in consolidating the gains in naval cooperation and deepening the existing partnership between the two navies.

This bilateral engagement underscores the commitment of both nations to fostering a secure and stable maritime environment in the region. By enhancing interoperability, sharing expertise, and aligning strategies, the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman aim to effectively address shared maritime challenges and contribute to the overall peace and prosperity of the region.

As the global maritime landscape continues to evolve, such collaborative efforts between India and Oman highlight the importance of strengthening maritime partnerships and promoting a rules-based international order at sea.
