“No major party in the country has given tickets to people of the transgender community. They consider us dead, but we are alive”

As preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections intensifies across the nation, the capital city of Delhi is witnessing a groundbreaking development. In a pioneering move, Rajan Singh has emerged as India’s first transgender candidate, contesting the polls from South Delhi to champion the rights of the transgender community.

Singh’s candidacy has ignited enthusiasm within the transgender and kinnar communities, who are actively campaigning and seeking public support through vibrant dance performances. This pivotal moment marks a significant stride toward inclusivity and representation in the country’s political landscape.

Speaking to reporters, Rajan Singh expressed frustration over the lack of representation for transgender individuals within major political parties. “Today, no major party in the country has given tickets to people of the transgender community. They consider us dead, but we are alive,” Singh stated. “Therefore, we are fighting elections to protect our rights and dignity.”

Singh’s platform revolves around a resolute commitment to establish a National Transgender Commission and ensure access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and dedicated infrastructure like toilets for the transgender community. “I promise that with the power of votes, I will establish the National Transgender Commission and ensure education, toilets, health, and employment arrangements for all transgender communities,” Singh declared.

Highlighting the pressing issues faced by the community, Singh shed light on the harsh realities endured by many transgender individuals. “Our people are still beggars on the streets. They are sex workers. They are forcibly extorted. Transgender people face harassment all the time,” Singh lamented. “No one in the administration listens to us. Many of my companions have been raped, but they still have not received justice.”

Singh’s candid remarks underscore the urgent need for representation and advocacy within the political sphere. “Many things happen to us, but those who claim to represent us in Parliament do not know the pain we know,” Singh remarked, emphasizing the disconnect between policymakers and the lived experiences of the transgender community. Advocating for affirmative action akin to the reservations afforded to women, Singh stressed the economic and social challenges faced by the community.

“If we also have reservations like women, and there will be nominated positions for transgender people, it will be better because economically we are not fit and we have no support,” Singh asserted.

As the election fever grips the nation, Rajan Singh’s groundbreaking candidacy has sparked hope for a more inclusive and equitable future for the transgender community in India. The nation watches with bated breath as this historic campaign unfolds, potentially paving the way for greater representation and awareness of the issues faced by a long-marginalized segment of society.
