The District Police Anantnag on Thursday apprehended an Over-Ground Worker (OGW) with the help of the recently deployed Facial Recognition System (FRS), marking a significant breakthrough ahead of the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY-2025).
According to a police spokesperson, the FRS system, installed as part of enhanced security measures for the pilgrimage, identified the suspect at around 5:00 PM at the Langanbal Naka checkpoint. “The individual, a resident of Seer Hamdan, was wanted in connection with an FIR registered in 2005 at Police Station Mattan,” the spokesperson said.
The accused, who had been working as a carpenter under a different identity, was immediately taken into custody and handed over to Police Station Pahalgam for further legal proceedings. “This swift interception underscores the growing impact of technology-driven policing. It also sends a strong deterrent message to anti-social elements as SANJY-2025 approaches,” the spokesperson added. District Police Anantnag has significantly upgraded electronic surveillance and security deployments along all Yatra routes to ensure a safe and hassle-free pilgrimage. “Any attempt to disrupt public order or endanger the safety of pilgrims will be dealt with strictly under the law,” the official warned.
