In response to the unfortunate damage sustained by the recently unveiled Statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort, Sindhudurg, a joint technical committee is being formed to thoroughly investigate the incident.

According to a Defence Spokesperson, “The committee will be headed by the Indian Navy and include representatives from the Maharashtra Government, along with technical experts.”

“The statue, which was unveiled on December 4, 2023, as part of the Navy Day celebrations, suffered damage following the exceptional weather conditions that have affected the region. The Navy Day event, hosted for the first time in Sindhudurg, was a significant occasion aimed at honoring the legacy of the Maratha Navy and its founder, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose contributions to maritime defense and security laid the foundation for the modern Indian Navy”, the Spokesperson said.

Navy Day and the Statue’s Significance

The unveiling of the statue was a key highlight of the Navy Day celebrations, marking a tribute to the historic maritime prowess of the Maratha Navy under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The project, which saw close collaboration between the Indian Navy and the Maharashtra Government, was not only a symbol of the region’s rich naval heritage but also an acknowledgment of its strategic importance in India’s maritime history.

The Indian Navy conceptualized and spearheaded the project, working in tandem with the state government, which also provided the necessary funding. The statue’s installation at Rajkot Fort was seen as a fitting tribute to the Maratha warrior king, whose naval strategies were instrumental in establishing a strong coastal defense system during his reign.

Damage and the Formation of the Joint Committee

The damage to the statue, which has been attributed to the severe weather conditions, has prompted swift action from both the Indian Navy and the Maharashtra Government. The joint technical committee being formed will be responsible for investigating the specific causes of the damage, assessing the extent of the impact, and recommending the necessary measures to repair and restore the statue.

The Indian Navy, in its official statement, expressed its deep concern over the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the statue is repaired and reinstated at the earliest.

Steps Ahead: Restoration and Reinstatement

The committee’s findings will guide the restoration process, with an emphasis on not only repairing the physical damage but also enhancing the statue’s resilience against future weather-related challenges. The Indian Navy and the Maharashtra Government are expected to pool their resources and expertise to ensure that the statue is restored to its original glory.

The Navy’s role in the restoration efforts underscores its dedication to preserving the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the historical connection between the Maratha Navy and the Indian Navy. The reinstatement of the statue will serve as a continued symbol of the enduring spirit of maritime defense that has defined the region for centuries. The statue at Rajkot Fort will once again stand tall as a tribute to the Maratha king, embodying the strength, resilience, and strategic brilliance that he brought to India’s coastal defenses—a legacy that the modern Indian Navy continues to uphold.
