In a firm commitment to finding green and sustainable transport solutions, the Indian Army has joined forces with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for demonstration trials of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology. This partnership underscores the Army’s dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Army and IOCL in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), and Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil. During the event, the Indian Army received one Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, marking the commencement of a mutually beneficial partnership between the two organizations. The MoU emphasizes their commitment to fostering innovation and advancing sustainable transport solutions for the future.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology offers a clean and efficient alternative by converting Hydrogen gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process, leaving only water vapor as a by-product, ensuring zero emissions.

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus boasts a seating capacity of 37 passengers and promises an impressive mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg onboard tank of Hydrogen fuel. Notably, on March 21st, 2023, the Indian Army became the first government entity to sign an MoU with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited for the installation of Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid Power Plants along the Northern Borders. A pilot project is being set up at Chushul, where a 200-Kilowatt Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid will provide 24×7 clean electricity to troops deployed in inhospitable terrain and extreme climatic conditions.

With a focus on innovation and environmental responsibility, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus endeavor between the Indian Army and IOCL represents a significant stride towards cleaner and greener transport solutions.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to exploring and adopting sustainable technologies for the future,” said General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff. “The Indian Army is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a greener environment.”

Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are proud to collaborate with the Indian Army in this pioneering effort to introduce Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology. This initiative aligns with our vision of promoting clean and sustainable energy solutions for the nation.”

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus trials mark a significant milestone in the Indian Army’s journey towards embracing eco-friendly transportation alternatives. By exploring cutting-edge technologies like Hydrogen Fuel Cells, the Army is leading by example and paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, initiatives like these demonstrate the Indian Army’s commitment to being a responsible and forward-thinking organization, dedicated to protecting not only the nation but also the planet we call home.
