Media Criticised for Unverified Reporting
The Jammu district police have strongly refuted allegations circulating on social media and local news channels regarding their handling of a reported rape case.
In an official statement released today, the police spokesperson categorically denied claims that the Channi Himmat Police Station had failed to take cognizance of a rape complaint.
“This news is totally baseless, concocted, false, and done to malign the image of Channi police,” the spokesperson declared. The police expressed surprise that the news item was reportedly covered in front of the Channi Himmat Police Station without verifying facts with the station police officer.
Contrary to the circulating reports, the spokesperson confirmed that the police had indeed taken prompt action on the victim’s complaint. “On the complaint of the victim, SHO Channi Himmat Jammu did take cognizance of the matter and registered a case FIR No.97/2024 U/s 64/351 BNS on 16.08.2024 (yesterday),” the statement read. It further added that the victim’s medical examination had been conducted, and both accused persons were arrested with the investigation already in progress.
The Jammu Police have urged media outlets to verify news contents with responsible police officers before publication and to avoid presenting one-sided stories.
