Chief Minister Omar Abdullah assured strengthening of media institutions in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, encouraging journalists to freely critique government policies that may impact public interest negatively.

In his first address at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan Jammu since taking office on October 16, Abdullah acknowledged the media’s historical struggles while promising robust institutional support. “While I may not always enjoy reading criticism of my government, I guarantee no journalist will face retribution for doing their job,” Abdullah declared.

Omar sought to reassure journalists by acknowledging their long-standing challenges in renewing accreditations and registrations. “For years, journalists have faced difficulties in getting their accreditations renewed, often struggling with …….hurdles,” he admitted.

However, he vowed a change in this approach, stating, “I assure you, there will be no censorship on the media. You are free to do your job, and your rights will be upheld.” Omar’s promise reflects a commitment to protecting press freedom and simplifying procedures for media professionals.

In a moment of candid reflection, the Chief Minister shared personal insights from his time away from power. “Those who wouldn’t respond to my messages for five years are now sending greetings morning, noon, and night,” he remarked with characteristic wit. “Even my closest friends became unreachable during those five years.”

Omar also opened up about his political journey through 2024, describing his unexpected loss in the Lok Sabha elections. “The defeat was shocking, but I believed Allah had different plans, When I lost the elections people said Ab Khattam……….,” he said.

The subsequent assembly elections proved transformative, returning him to the chief minister’s office with renewed public support. Emphasizing inclusive governance, Abdullah pledged to work for all constituents, regardless of their voting choices. “My government will strive to exceed expectations of both our supporters and those who chose other parties,” he assured.
