In a major crackdown against corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended an accused Office Qanoongo (revenue official) from the office of Tehsildar Banihal, District Ramban, for allegedly accepting a bribe.
According to official sources, the CBI had registered a case against the accused Qanoongo based on allegations that he had demanded a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from the complainant for processing an application related to land settlement. After negotiations, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs. 18,000. Acting swiftly, the CBI laid a trap on May 27, 2024, and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs. 18,000 from the complainant. Subsequent searches at the residential and official premises of the accused led to the recovery of approximately Rs. 3,71,500 in cash and other incriminating documents.
The arrest of the accused Qanoongo by the CBI is a significant step towards curbing corruption and upholding transparency in the governance machinery. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
