Transgender Candidate Faces Discrimination, Stages Protest to Exercise Voting Rights in Delhi

In a concerning incident that highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community, Rajan Singh, the only transgender candidate from South Delhi, had to stage a sit-in protest at a polling station to assert their fundamental right to vote during today’s elections.

When Rajan Singh, an independent candidate for the South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, arrived at polling booth number 125, located at a Government School in J Block, Sangam Vihar, they were denied the opportunity to cast their vote. The authorities at the polling booth claimed that there were no special provisions for transgender individuals, effectively denying Singh their democratic right.

Undeterred by this discriminatory treatment, Rajan Singh took a bold stance and staged a sit-in protest at the polling station. Their peaceful act of civil disobedience drew attention to the issue and prompted the intervention of senior officers from the Delhi Police.

According to eyewitness accounts, despite informing the officials that they were a transgender voter and a candidate, Rajan Singh was reportedly pushed, adding to the indignity they faced. Singh later stated that no separate lines or toilet facilities were provided for transgender individuals at any polling booth, underscoring the systemic lack of inclusivity.

“Even after 75 years of independence, such significant discrimination persists,” Rajan Singh expressed, their voice resonating with the frustration and marginalization experienced by the transgender community. “Transgender people in Delhi are not being allowed to vote.” In the face of this unacceptable situation, senior officials swiftly arrived at the scene in Sangam Vihar and facilitated Rajan Singh’s voting process under police protection. However, no action has been reported against the officer who allegedly pushed Singh, raising concerns about accountability and the seriousness with which such incidents are addressed.

This incident has once again brought to light the ongoing struggle for equal rights and representation faced by the transgender community in India. Despite legal recognition and efforts towards inclusivity, instances like these serve as a stark reminder that more work needs to be done to ensure that every citizen, regardless of their gender identity, can exercise their fundamental rights without discrimination or obstruction. As the nation grapples with this issue, Rajan Singh’s courageous stand serves as a rallying call for greater awareness, sensitivity, and tangible measures to create a truly inclusive society where every voice is heard and every vote counts.
